Forensic relevance

Versatile ISOBMFF container format (ISO/IEC 14496-12) for video recordings, screen captures, and downloaded media. The ftyp box at offset 4 identifies the specific brand (mp42, isom, M4V, etc.). The mvhd (Movie Header) box contains creation and modification timestamps in QuickTime epoch (seconds since 1904-01-01 UTC — not Unix epoch); despite the specification, many cameras store local time instead of UTC. The udta (User Data) box may contain device make/model, recording software, and GPS coordinates (e.g. from GoPro, DJI, dashcams, smartphones). Metadata changes when a video is re-encoded or edited — altered mvhd timestamps and missing udta boxes are indicators of processing. Screen recordings from iOS and Android are commonly stored as MP4.
