Forensische Relevanz
Das Jet-/ACE-Datenbankformat von Microsoft Access: .mdb (Jet 3 für Access 97, Jet 4 für Access 2000–2003) und .accdb (ACE, ab Access 2007); die Variante 'MSISAM Database' verwendet Microsoft Money. Daten werden in Pages zu 2048 (Jet 3) oder 4096 Bytes (Jet 4/ACE) gespeichert. Die erste Page nennt an Offset 4 die Datenbank-Engine und enthält an Offset 0x14 die Formatversion; sie ist mit einem festen RC4-Schlüssel verschleiert und enthält das Datenbankpasswort (Offset 0x42), bei Jet 4 zusätzlich maskiert mit einem Wert, der aus dem auf derselben Page gespeicherten Erstellungsdatum der Datenbank abgeleitet wird. Gelöschte Zeilen werden nur in der Row Offset Table ihrer Daten-Page markiert, ihr Inhalt kann daher erhalten bleiben, bis die Datenbank komprimiert wird. Solche Datenbanken sind in Geschäfts-, Buchhaltungs- und Verwaltungsanwendungen verbreitet.
